The difference with this second burial was that she was moderately more alive.

The pool was a womb gone rotten; the water stung her exposed flesh and kept her down with their deceitful weight. She floated in and out of the pain, feeling its cold implacable hands on hers.

There was nothing in the world but this, she thought. No half-demons who could not stop dwelling on her, no children and wounded soldiers who used to find solace (and nothing else) in a kindly wandering miko, no resurrected mercenary soldiers and holy men who stared into her eyes and discovered the final rest that had always eluded her. No such thing as schemes, revenge, pursuits. Nothing but the faithful, ever-constant pain.

She could stay, but she was not willing to. Peace was not meant for her, never for her, never this easily.
