Her hands on his had been gentle; had been true. He tried to recall if they ever held hands before. What came, instead, was the memory of how the world had seemed to recede from him when he received the news of her death. Did she, then, experience a similar sorrow for having to leave him and the team she was entrusted with?

I'm the vice-captain now, he said to her shadow, shrugging himself into his T-shirt. Would you still say that I've got no talent? Or would you say that you knew I could make up for the lack, because it's me?

The voices around him were trickling out of the locker room. He zipped up her windbreaker and pulled it close around him.
