Occasionally someone would get curious enough to ask Ukitake why he had not chosen a new vice-captain. In his turn, he explained that, while Shiba Kaien's courage was not completely irreplaceable, he still valued it very much. Also, the continuous void would serve as a reminder for the rest of his men.

Once he was covertly accused of putting Kaien on a pedestal, preserving his memory as something that was more perfect than the man had been. Rukia hesitantly asked him if this was true, and Ukitake answered, "Do you, at this moment, think of him as perfect?" Rukia lowered her head. Ukitake smiled. "In a way he was. But of course, I needn't tell you about how the tangible isn't everything."
