He brewed his own coffee, and made some for her out of discipline instead of attentiveness, something he knew she would have approved of. This was a detail lost among others in the flow of their everyday life, the impossibly blue sky outside the window, and the slanting sunlight falling on the framed picture on his desk during late afternoons.

Her arm bothered her only when she was taking a bath, and then only if she rubbed the towel the wrong way. Every night before bedtime she reminded him not to read too much - it would put additional and unnecessary strain on his right eye - and he replied, almost absently, that she should consider this recent medical development called skin grafting.

"I think it might be a little too late for that," she said. "You wouldn't want an artificial eye to tamper with your looks, would you?"

He pointed out that it was different. She asked how. "You have to wear long sleeves outdoors and your arm can barely stand hot water."

"You get headaches in poor lights. Shall we go see the optician tomorrow?"

Rarely sure as they were what they would dream of as they fell asleep, they were secretly glad to hear their words echo from the bedroom walls and assume different shapes.
