[Aug. 8, 2006][original] A Sweet-Scented Letter
Title: A Sweet-Scented Letter
Day/Theme: Aug. 8, 2006 "To love is to kiss, to touch hand or arm or to send letters whose spells are stronger than witchcraft. Love is nothing but this."
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Seif x Christine, Rowan, Ran, Li
Rating: PG
"Sir! Sir Seif!" gasped the bedraggled messenger as he staggered up to the group of knights. His left hand shook weakly and the folded paper he held slid from his grasp. He fumbled to catch the letter and gave a sigh of relief as Seif's hand shot out and plucked the message from the air.
The sandy-brown-haired man smiled, "Thank you. Why don't you go and get some rest now?"
The messenger grinned in return. "Don't mind if I do, Sir." More relaxed than before, he limped away from the knights back into the main camp.
"No letter from Aska?" Ran asked disappointedly. The blond man already knew the answer.
Seif shook his head and slit the seal on his letter.
"Love letter?" Rowan teased, "Is it just me or does that stationery smell rather sweet?"
"A love letter for Seif?" Li laughed, "Rowan, that helmet is obscuring your senses!"
Seif ignored their comments. He was focused fully on the contents of the message.
"My dear knight,
For the sake of the morale of our most-honored troops I have convinced the Holy Mother of the positive effect my appearance among the soldiers would have. After some deliberation, she has permitted me to go forth and join you. This message is traveling two days ahead of me to allow you some time to prepare for my arrival.
Honestly, I am quite looking forward to seeing you in particular. Since my last vision I've been concerned about you. I have not heard any bad news, so for the moment I assume that you are in good health, and hopefully in good spirits as well.
When I arrive, I shall see for myself. You will be in my prayers.
Your Christine."
A flock of finches chirped noisily, hopping across the wet ground. Seif sighed dreamily, staring past the birds off into the distance.
Ran and Li gave each other a meaningful glance, which Rowan missed. "What's the hour now?" the Black Knight inquired bluntly, squinting up at the clouded sky, "Time enough to see if anything's hot and ready to eat?"
Li waved a gloved hand towards the cooks' tent where pale puffs of smoke could be seen slowly trailing away to blend with the clouds above. "Why don't you go find out? And if they're really ready, please come back and get us. I wouldn't mind a steaming mug full of black tea."
"Orange tea for me," Ran added.
With armor scraping together near his joints, Rowan got up and meandered off to the field kitchen.
Seif was still in his own world, entirely enchanted. To Ran and Li he said only this, "Christine is coming."
They understood.
