She had only ever owned one pair of heels. They were flat and square with a one-inch heel, an awkward mauve, that she wore for her grandmother’s birthday and kept in the back of her closet. Miwako, happening upon them one day, actually winced.
The second pair, the first of many George would give her, she still kept. Polished black crocodile leather, a thin three-inch heel like the elegant finger of a society lady. They had a kind of dewy, promising sheen. The first time she wore them, nothing could contain the erratic movements of her body. She waddled, rather than walked, across the basement floor.
Arashi had unkindly called her “ducky”.
Years later, strolling into the foyer with the clack of her heels rolling in time with her hips, she dares them to suspect the word “ducky” is in her vocabulary.
