The children spend their free afternoons daring each other to enter the house, which rumor says is haunted. One child says she once saw a lady in white at the window. Her friends dismiss her story as being too staple; ethereal ladies in white, they tell her, are no longer in fashion. "Try a wandering young man whose hair has gone white with sorrow," they say teasingly. She pouts, thinking of the stranger who stared at the house for hours from atop the hill yesterday; he was somehow only a little less spectral than the lady. Her friends proceeded to draw lots to choose which of them would sneak into the house tonight, and the girl wonders what she ought to do if she should run into the young man, whose palpable air of defeat she found more intimidating than any apparition.
