The kitchen in her new apartment is large and bright. All the equipment is shiny new. It is beautiful, but unfamiliar.

Sometimes, she wanders, a little lost, touching the wooden counter, the black stove and the snow white refrigerator that hums and vibrates softly underneath her fingers. She regards this new kitchen with a sort of admiration, reverence and, of course, she loves it.

But in the back of her mind, she’s remembering hot summer nights as she stirs together a cool salad in a smaller kitchen with a flickering light. She’s missing an older refrigerator that sometimes whines loudly in complaint. But, rarely, does she hear its complaints because Nana will be sitting at their little wooden table in front of the window.

Their old radio-cassette player will be playing and Nana will sing along with whatever song that catches her fancy. Nana will sing to catchy tunes and before long, she herself will end up singing along. That is, until Nana accuses her of being unable to sing. They will throw words at each other and end up laughing helplessly over their salads.

And she will shake head in the new kitchen and tell herself, firmly, that she will learn to love it just as well.
