Series: Virus Buster Serge
Character/Pairing: Macus-centric

In the Shadows
*~*~*
As children, they were inseparable. It was always thought where one was, the other would soon to follow. Two bodies, one soul, it was said.
Whenever Raven did something, Macus had to try it, more often with disastrous results than not. Always coming in second.
Macus persevered. He loved his older brother very much but soon grew tired of living in the shadows of Raven’s brilliance. It was a fate he couldn’t avoid. Any breaks in luck? Were Raven’s. And while Raven would always share his success, it chafed Macus that they weren’t his successes at all. It wasn’t his achievements which took him forward, it was Raven’s generosity.
And he was grateful. Doors opened to him he wouldn’t have had access to otherwise.
When Raven created S.T.A.N.D. and offered him the job of leading the team of Variable Gears, once more Macus knew he would be living in his brother’s shadow. Sure, he had a position of leadership. He was even second only to Raven.
Again…second. A reoccurring theme in his life that was wearisome.
But then, fate seemed to favor those who suffered in diligent silence. Who refused to accept things as they were.
Raven began to operate more autonomously from the oversight of the Hive Committee, which irritated those in power. His blind arrogance was taking them down a road fraught with danger and eventual oblivion for S.T.A.N.D. Something Macus fought to build, even if it was at his brother’s sufferance.
And he wouldn’t let it go down without a fight. Even if he had to sell his soul.
In his fortuitous meeting with one of Hive, whose interest was in keeping S.T.A.N.D. functioning, even if it were to further her own agenda, Macus was assured S.T.A.N.D. would continue to grow and thrive. Taking care of the team he led.
He’d be out from under his brother’s shadow.
In making his deal with the devil, he’d strip control of S.T.A.N.D. from Raven. His brother had lost his vision and would not understand, even though Macus’ bold move for control would, in the end, save Raven’s life.
The separation would be complete and Macus would begin to finally shine in his own light.
…at the cost of cleaving their soul in two.
