Lunacy


“HAAAAAAWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!” says Sean.

Sariya watches him complacently in the darkness. She leans back, her elbows in the sand, tiny rocks push against her freckles under the moonlight.

“HAAAAAWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOO!” he says again.

“What are you doing?” she asks.

A howl catches in his throat.

“Talking to coyotes.” He says. His voice is plain and simple.

Then he takes a final, dramatic breath,

“HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!” and sits down.


There is silence.


Sariya frowns skeptically.

“What did you say?”


He rubs his arms to fight the chill of the evening.

“I told them I speak coyote.”

He grins.

She only shakes her head.


Neither hear, in the distance, a faint and hopeful reply.
