Always A Need

*~*~*

His backpack was filled with only the essentials. He needed it light to move fast. It was still too soon after Treize’s death. Far too many people recognized him.

On the road, he hitchhiked when he could, walked when he couldn’t. There were places he could stop for the night, tucked away, bunkers and old supply houses from the war that fell into disuse once it was over.

During the months that followed the end of the war, Zechs kept his head down, drawing as little attention to himself as he could. Odd jobs, nothing was too menial for him. Making just enough to survive and then move on when things got too comfortable.

He was looking for something, some reason to justify his continued existence. Without Treize, Zechs wondered if there was any reason for him to remain behind. The war was over.

On occasion, he would run across the attempts his sister made to find him. Relena had her sights set on a political career and surprisingly, wasn’t interested in claiming the realm of the Sanq Kingdom. The last pleading email for him to contact her was particularly rife with emotional blackmail to return ‘home’ and take up his rightful place at the head of the monarchy.

He just…wasn’t ready. There was something out there for him still. Something he needed to do, needed to find, needed to be. And it’s what kept one foot in front of the other in the relentless search.

The restlessness was fed by a small tickle in the back of his mind, an uncomfortable thought that wouldn’t stay buried. There was something that hadn’t been taken care of, something not wrapped up. When he was in a place to get on the ‘net and search, using one of the anonymous IDs he’d set up since long before the war to monitor political developments, he found it.

Actually, her.

Lady Une had been named to an intelligence agency designed to investigate rumors of terrorist activity and to put an end to it before it got out of control. The fact the ESUN’s President felt such an organization warranted creation was enough to set Zechs’ instincts on edge and the restlessness stepped up in intensity.

Approaching the one year anniversary of the end of the war, Zechs found himself watching the news feeds with greater interest, searching the signs. Something was on the horizon; he could feel it settling in his bones with calm, cold assurance. His battle instincts were never wrong. He was the Lightning Count for good reason.

And he knew human nature. Man can never leave war alone. History had borne this out time and again.

A fact driven home for Zechs, not in an epiphanic realization in the middle of another nightmare that woke him screaming, but on his break in a small obscure diner in some remote town in the middle of nowhere. Looking up at the vid screen and at a ghost from his past in the form of a small girl, he knew.

As long as there was war, there was a need for him.
