[May 30] [Naruto] This Addiction

Title: This Addiction
Day/Theme: May 30th, The dose makes the poison
Series: Naruto
Rating: PG-13
Character/Pairing: Naruto, Naruto/Sakura (Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke)
Author’s Notes: Possible spoilers for recent manga chapters.

Naruto had forgotten how much failure hurt (he failed every exam he took, no matter how much he studied.) Naruto had forgotten how much it hurt to lose someone you cared for (he faced that every day when Kiba, Shikamaru and Chouji were hustled away by glaring parents.) Naruto had forgotten how much it hurt to watch someone die (Haku looked even more beautiful with a hole in his heart.)

Sasuke was good at reminding him of pain.

He turns his head and closes his eyes, Sakura asking if he was a masochist all those years ago haunting his memory.

-

The next day, Naruto wakes up to Shikamaru sitting on a chair next to his bed, an odd look on his face.

“Shikamaru!” Naruto says with a grin (he only frowns around Sakura and Kakashi now.) “What are you doing here?”

Shikamaru’s always been blunt, but Naruto is still surprised when Shikamaru says, “When are you going to give up on Sasuke?”

“The day I die,” Naruto answers.

Naruto’s not smiling and Shikamaru looks at him and thinks of a smile that reminds him of a knife and wonders how they’re connected.

-

There’s something different in her eyes and for a moment Naruto nearly thinks that Sakura has given up on Sasuke too.

(She saw him in his final form, his skin gray and wings ready to lift him up and take him away forever.)

“We’ll be able to leave soon,” Sakura says. “Kakashi-sensei is coming too.”

Naruto is about to comment on that, but Sakura moves her arms and he notices some dried blood on her sleeve.

“Where did that come from?” Naruto says.

“Someone said Sasuke was hopeless,” Sakura’s voice has lost what made her Sakura years ago and chills Naruto to the bones.

Naruto has fallen so far that he applauds her in his mind and thinks she’s never looked prettier in his life.

-

Naruto thinks about his first kiss (Sasuke, his lips were much too soft to really belong to a boy) when he’s kissing Sakura the night before they leave to get Sasuke.

She’s on top of him, biting his lips like Sasuke would, and Naruto runs his fingers through her hair, wondering if Sasuke’s would prickle under his palms as well.

Naruto knows he should push her away, say they should wait for Sasuke, but Sakura already knows.

And Naruto’s selfish enough to want to keep tasting Sasuke in Sakura’s mouth.
