17th May // Les Miserables // "Over the Seine"

Title: Over the Seine
Day/Theme: 17th May - The coldest eyes and the cruellest hands
Series: Les Miserables
Character/Pairing: Javert
Rating: PG

The wind whipped at his face, pulling the expanse of his jacket and threatening to send his top hat into the blank oblivion on the other side of the stone. He raised his with cold, weary eyes and the stars that twinkled down at him offered so little comfort. Why didn't Valjean just finish it when he had the chance? He was ready to die then, just as he was ready to die now, he couldn't see any other way out, there was no other way out. For the first time in such a long time he let the emotions that he had kept hidden, even from himself free, feeling them wash over him in waves like the ones that lapped at the shore on the other side of the stone.

Reaching into his coat he pulled out a letter that he had carefully written, it was his resignation, as she should have done so many years ago. He took off his top hat and his badge and his truncheon and placed them all together on the ground, the letter on top. With complete calm he reached into his coat once more and pulled out a pair of handcuffs, the only pair of handcuffs he had ever used, those that had held Valjean all those years ago in Paris. How ironic that now they would hold him to the very end.

Taking a deep breath he swung his leg his leg over the rail, quickly followed by the other and with an uncharacteristic smile jumped.
