He looked at her dubiously, not quite knowing how to break things to her. The results of the carbon dating had returned. The stone slab they found, spidery with beguiling runes, was a hoax.
Sakura Tsubaki opened an eye to return his gaze and waited for him to speak.
“Hey,” she finally prompted. “What’s up?”
Tonami Takefumi sighed. “It’s not old enough,” he finally said. “It’s not what we’re looking for.”
“Is that so?” She seemed to withdraw, to think, then she got up and stretched. “Let’s go to bed.”
He blinked in spite of himself. “You’re not disappointed?”
“Of course I am.” Then she shrugged. “But we have a long day ahead of us. Gotta sleep well, you know?”
“We’re going back to the excavation site?”
“Naturally. Just because it’s not what we’re looking for doesn’t mean we’re not going to look at it anymore.”
Tonami scratched his head. “I guess, you’re right.”
Tsubaki just grinned.
“I’ll never have your positive outlook,” he said in admiration.
“But that’s what makes us a great team, ne?”
"Probably."
