As his world revolved around Saya—nay, was her—the changes to it were starkly apparent when Haji felt her move about again. It was subtle, soft and feathery, like a babe’s movement felt by another from without its mother’s swell. To share in her serenity, to monopolize her so utterly, had been pleasurable, but the time for static watching had come to end. Action, albeit first stilted, first concealed, was needed.

Her awakening did not necessarily come with the opening of her eyes. The story had to progress first before details of the past were revealed, before the facts that a past did exist and the sleep merely intermission were understood, before he was remembered. It would be apparent in the storm of events brewing around her that her tale was already in the middle, already in progress. The past was important, was key to the future, was a beginning to pair with a much-desired ending.

He could not tell her all these. He could only watch, only pour the amalgamation of thoughts and emotions he seemingly did not have into the forlorn strings of the deep, dolorous cello. Coaxed by the music, her awareness would eventually grow to include him, for the melody was a constant and unchanging accompaniment, was encapsulated by time and polished into a certain invulnerability, was in essence him and therefore hers.

The telling would continue.
