[May 3] [The Belgariad] clear as mud
Title: clear as mud
Day/Theme: May 3 / About as useful as the ability to regurgitate whole lobsters
Series: The Belgariad (David Eddings)
Character/Pairing: Garion, Silk
Rating: G
Word Count: 150
00:10
Weeks had passed since Garion, Mister Wolf, Aunt Pol, and Durnik joined the two mismatched men to form an oddly assorted group. Garion had been warned in some manner, though not in a suspiciously unnatural way, that the rat-like businessman was shamelessly unscrupulous. And yet, the boy found him agreeable, causing quite an upheaval in his conscientious sensibilities. Sleeplessness got the better of his tongue one night, and suddenly he blurted out a personal query.
“Do you believe in conscience?”
Silk, unsurprised, assumed a mournful affect. “Unfortunately,” he said. “It’s like a highly contagious affliction. It crops up once in a while, depending on an individual’s susceptibility to it.”
“So you mean you do have one?” Garion seemed relief. “Conscience, I mean.”
“Well...” Silk became thoughtful. “The trouble with conscience is that it tends to take non-negotiable stances.”
“Huh? I don’t get it.”
“Exactly that, Garion,” confided Silk. "Exactly that."
