[August 5] [Star Ocean] Baby Boy
Title: Baby Boy
Day/Theme: Day 5/A boy
Series: Star Ocean/Star Ocean the Second Story
Character/Pairing: Ronixis, Claude, a little Iria
Rating: G
Commodore Ronixis J. Kenni was panicking.
This was unusual for him. He was renowned through most of the Federation military for his cool head and grace under pressure, and since his adventures on Roak and the subsequent defeat of the Rezonian invasion Ronixis' star had risen quite steadily and rapidly. In fact, he had been promoted to Commodore several months ago, around the time that his wife, Iria, had their first child.
Therein was where the problem lay. Iria had gone out with some of her female friends for the first time since the baby's birth, and Ronixis had cheerfully volunteered to take care of baby Claude while she was gone. She'd given him a million instructions and numbers to call before she left, but he was confident. He'd faced down honest-to-God demons and managed incredibly risky military maneuvers...how hard could it be taking care of a squalling infant?
The squalling, of course, was the problem. The baby just wouldn't stop. Ronixis had tried everything. Toys, food, burping - nothing helped. He'd changed the baby's diapers three times in hopes that was the problem, but no such luck. He'd rocked the baby for nearly an hour with no noticeable effect. He'd tried talking sternly, talking gently - he'd even tried singing him a lullaby, which he would never have dreamed of doing unless the straits were truly dire.
After three hours, his ears were starting to ring from the constant wailing. He looked at the baby, noticing how its face was drawn into an unpleasant scowl (and also appeared to be half wide open mouth). Finally, he decided on a last resort.
He laid Claude in his crib and rushed into the next room. Yanking open the closet door, he reached for his commodore's hat. Back in the nursery, he thrust the hat towards baby Claude.
Miracle of miracles, the crying stopped. Claude looked up, entranced, at the vibrant red hat. His stubby little arms reached for it and yanked it out of Ronixis' hands. Ronixis was glad to let it go if it meant that the godawful crying stopped. Now that it was quiet again, he no longer felt as if his head was being squeezed in a vise. With a sigh, he sat down in the upholstered chair next to the crib and leaned back to enjoy the silence.

"I'm back...is he asleep?" Iria called quietly as she came into the room.
"Well, he's not asleep, but he's quiet."
"Did everything go okay? No problems?"
Ronixis forced a smile. "No, no problems at all."
"Good, good." She looked down into the crib and smiled. "Oh, he's playing with your hat! That's so adorable!"
Ronixis joined her and gazed at Claude, playing with his commodore's hat. He felt paternal pride for this small wrinkled person slowly suffuse him - for the first time, really. "Who knows, maybe he'll have one of these himself one day. Imagine that!"
With a mighty noise, Claude vomited all over his new toy.
"Looks like you're going to need a new hat," Iria said.
