The bouquet was nondescript, the table rather quaint, the room ordinary; Susan found it all achingly beautiful. She found herself tearing up; a lumpy annoyance was stuck in that place where her neck met her chest, minutely expanding till she choked and gasped aloud.
It has been years since she woke up and found herself orphaned by a train wreck (from the glib newspapers, no less.) Today, she joined with another to create a bud meant to bloom into a new family. But now of all days, she felt the worse of darkness creeping upon her breast. The truth was, she missed them all terribly, even till now, her mother and father, her brothers and sister. There was a time when she felt cheated by their sudden loss—was there something she was missing out from? Something indefinably wonderful and at the same time frightening?
From elsewhere, strains of rock and roll blithely mourned the death of young love, ironic and strong. She had mourned for her siblings the same way, fought against the blackest of despair with her best foot forward and a tremulous smile: positive, postive, positive. Would they still call her a wet blanket, she wondered.
On one side, she noticed an ornately carved wardrobe—didn’t they have an elaborate little game involving some enchanted wardrobe? Try as she might, she couldn’t recall the details, only that fierce and lonely feeling of having been shut out, say, a dinner party everybody else was invited to. Ah, but she vowed, when her little ones come along (just one of the blushing bride’s fancy daydreams), she would remember the game for their sakes.
Her husband touched her arm lightly, and she looked about, as if waking from a dream. He smiled at her and she smiled back. Soon, perhaps, the ease of smiling would return to her lips, her eyes. For now, she accepted his hand and entered.
So be it.
