The words themselves are perfectly reasonable, exactly what anyone would want to hear from a Captain. The smiles, however, are additions, alterations, modifications, subtext brought to light, superscriptions and annotations on the regular statement that change the meaning.
Phrases like of course, don't worry about it, you know I'll take care of it, and what did you think I meant become dark promises rather than reassurances.
Some people prefer not to look at him during conversations, but even then the smiles are audible; they shimmer through the words like unclean light through glass.
