[April 17th] [The Three Musketeers] Diggers, Dug

Title: Diggers, Dug
Day/Theme: dollar diplomacy
Series: The Three Musketeers
Characters/Pairing: D'Artagnan, Porthos
Rating: G

"Let me run through this once more." Porthos held up one meaty hand, far too close to d'Artagnan's nose for comfort, and counted off points on his fingers. "Mazarin wants us to go to England."

"So he does," the Gascon replied, taking a discreet half-step back. Porthos had been known to gesticulate wildly when excited, and d'Artagnan liked his face the way it was.

"England," Porthos went on, "is a repulsive place. Full of beer, cabbages, and Englishmen."

"...yes?"

"Nevertheless, you promised we would go."

"So I did," d'Artagnan grumbled, becoming aggrieved at these continual accusations, "but as I recall there was a certain mutual interest involved. I remember repeated mentions of a barony - "

"It's not the going I mind!" Porthos growled. "It's the money, d'Artagnan. Or rather, the principle. We have honestly earned these four hundred pistoles of ours, selling straw - "

"Well, honestly is debatable, is it not?"

" - and now we're going to have to spend it all on cabbages because that Italian hasn't offered us enough funds for the journey!"

An expression of shame, that had been entirely absent when the recent rise in the price of hay had been discussed, flitted across d'Artagnan's face. "I did manage to raise his original bid, you know."

Faced with this evidence of sincere regret on the culprit's part, Porthos' great heart softened. "In that case, I forgive you. We'll simply have to admit defeat this once."

This magnanimous gesture did not seem to raise his friend's spirits perceptibly. "Outrun, outfought, and now out-bartered." D'Artagnan's mustache drooped sadly. "Suddenly I feel very old."
