[April 16th] [The Three Musketeers] Pour La Patrie

Title: Pour La Patrie
Day/Theme: i will show you fear in a handful of dust
Series: The Three Musketeers
Characters/Pairing: The Cardinal
Rating: G

Misguided patriotism is at once the most amusing and the most annoying thing I know.

Take those four young fellows I just left, for example. Such proud defiance, such absolute conviction that I am the embodiment of evil - and why? Oh, I can admit that they have good reasons, in some aspects! I would not resent their anger if this were all about the woman Bonancieux. God knows if anyone stole my mistress away, I would not view them kindly no matter what the political necessity behind it. But no. Their main complaint seems to be with the way I have unjustly and selfishly usurped power.

What a laugh! And what a blow, really, to my assessment of their wits. (Well, with the exception of the one called Porthos, who never has seemed to me to be especially bright.) These people have met Louis, and they still believe France would be better off if that dolt were allowed to run his own court? Monarchy, yes, but God save us all from individual monarchs!

Oh well, they are young. I, on the other hand - I grow old. Too old for idealism. Hopefully our young heroes will outgrow it too, in time to make themselves useful to me - and to France.
