[April 9] [Harry Potter] Discipline

Title: Discipline
Day/Theme: April 9/"Hunting with cats"
Series: Harry Potter
Character/Pairing: Filch and Mrs Norris
Rating: G

At last, the corridors were dark and silent, as they should be. Filch hated the noise that those horrible children made.

In fact, he hated children, period. Many times, they had almost made him want to leave the job, but he always decided against it in the end. For someone like him, finding a new place to work in wouldn't be easy at all. Besides, he knew he was good at what he did; he even enjoyed it when he wasn't too angry. A proper caretaker had to dislike children. It was the only way to realise what kind of things those little monsters were capable of.

When he was in a good mood – which, contrary to popular belief, did happen once in a while – his nightly wanderings felt almost like a sport. There was nothing like the accomplishment of catching a bunch of mischief-makers just a few steps away from the safety of their common room. The looks on their faces when they saw his lantern approaching were priceless.

Mrs Norris was the only one who understood this. She seemed to enjoy the job even more than he did. It was a pleasure to watch her as she moved silently down the halls, with the stealth of a hunter, until she jumped right in front of an unsuspecting student to taunt him with shining eyes and a feline smirk. That was a thing of beauty, and Filch wondered why nobody else seemed to appreciate it as such.

Then again, he knew that there were plenty of things that only he and Mrs Norris saw as what they really were, without anyone to agree with them. Discipline wasn't what it used to be anymore. The staff looked at the trouble that students caused and dismissed it as a bit of good-natured fun. They gave pointless detentions, or took points from their Houses, as if that meant anything to the cheeky troublemakers. He had hoped for a change when Professor Umbridge put some order in the school – finally, someone who knew how things should be done! – but that, of course, had been too good to last. Nothing happened, as he should have expected, and before he noticed they were back to the usual nonsense. It had been such a disappointment…

At least he could still do his part. He never stopped patrolling the corridors at night, jumping at the students with the lantern they dreaded so much, sending Mrs Norris to look for them. Someone had to put some fear in them, after all, or they would never behave. If the rest of the staff didn't do it, then he simply would have to take care of that himself.

It was a pity that nobody else could see the beauty in what they did, he thought, as he watched Mrs Norris preparing to jump.
