[April 5th] [The Three Musketeers] Not a Girl, Nor Yet a Woman

Title: Not a Girl, Nor Yet a Woman
Day/Theme: girls who are boys who like boys to be girls
Series: The Three Musketeers
Character/Pairing: D'Artagnan (implied Athos/D'Artagnan)
Rating: PG

At some point in the second year of their acquaintance, d’Artagnan begins to feel confused about Athos, or perhaps about himself.

He spends a great deal of time watching his friend. This activity is nothing new, but the purpose is. Since the day of their first meeting d’Artagnan has used Athos as a walking, speaking manual – on matters of honor, of etiquette, and of natural elegance as opposed to Aramis’ refined manners or Porthos’ ostentation. Now he watches for something very different, something he has never glimpsed but is sure must be there, beneath the surface.

For all his vigilance, d’Artagnan is disappointed. He finds nothing whatsoever that is womanly in Athos. Certainly Athos is beautiful, but his beauty is nothing like that of Aramis, who bereft of his mustache and beard would make quite a convincing young lady. Nor does his quietness make him demure, or his politeness, submissive; when Athos wishes to assert himself, he does it so naturally and forcefully that no one even thinks to protest.

For lack of support for his theory from that quarter, d’Artagnan turns to his mirror. Sadly, his own features – narrow, dark, with a bold nose and a mustache he still thinks looks very fine, even if everyone else claims it is too wispy and he should remain clean-shaven for another few years – are also obviously those of a young man. And as for his feelings… preposterous, to think he should turn into some fainting flower!

Which means there is no possibility – no risk, rather – of an attraction between Athos and himself. D’Artagnan finds this comforting. And if he sometimes feels an unchaste thrill when they touch, and if he sometimes fancies that Athos looks at him with a more than friendly affection – why, there must be some perfectly natural explanation.
