[April 1st] [The Three Musketeers (book)] Lost Heart

Title: Lost Heart
Day/Theme: dinner for three
Series: The Three Musketeers (book only, my stuff will make little sense if you've only seen the movies!)
Character/Pairing: The legendary four
Rating: G

The wedding is a splendid affair, despite Athos’ acerbic comment that Porthos should wait to spend his bride’s money until after they are married. Porthos, true to form, only laughs at that, and sends his three groomsmen off to write another three dozen invitations.

At least, with over two hundred people attending, the leftovers are a banquet in themselves. Late in the evening, after the bride and groom have been packed off to their newly-acquired home and the last drunken musketeers have been evicted or covered with blankets as the situation warrants, the remaining three Inseparables gather over a scavenged meal.

D’Artagnan does his best to tell himself that it’s only the long, hectic day that has him feeling tired. As for Athos, losing a friend to the horror that is matrimony is more than enough to account for his dourness. And whatever it is that has Aramis’ jokes fall so peculiarly flat, it can’t only be the fact that there’s no one on hand to misunderstand them. Surely not.
