The woman stood rigid under the waning moonlight, clutching the skin torn off her husband's chest to her own, his inert body lying near her feet.

Because she had become blind, she could not make sure that the fatal stab to his stomach had not torn out his internal organs, as well. She had run her hand three times over the spot to check, and found no proof of her fears. There was that consolation, at least. Satisfied, she now moved her hand farther up to rest it on his marble-cold face.

"Rest well, old beggar," she said. "I will find the brat who did this to you. And when I do, I'm going to use this gift of yours to send him to hell."

She started to smile, then her mouth trembled. But this was no time and place to keen out her loss and sorrow; the people whose brother her husband had killed might be searching for her. Pressing her palm down on his face one last time, she turned on her heels, and was there no more.
