Altessa was on one of her jewelry-shopping sprees again. Many of the most popular shops downtown were her places of interest, and they amazed her with tons of rings, necklaces, anklets, you name it. Altessa rested in her crystal-white carriage, face smug from all the money she spent on purchasing jewelry.
She found another store to check out and ordered the driver to stop. The unique appearance caught her eye, and she knew that she hadn't entered the shop before. The roof had a line of gems adorned in a rainbow formation, and the sign had tons and tons of diverse colors creating a mosaic. Altessa stepped gallantly out of the carriage, curious to see more of the shop, or more specifically, what the shop held.
Altessa stepped into the shop, pushing aside the beveled glass doors, followed by velvet drapes that hung from the ceiling. A hollow, amateur-esque melody filled the silence, and the air reeked of incense. To Altessa's disappointment, there weren't many bracelets, but there were other non-jewelry items encrusted in twinkling stones.
The tooting song stopped. "Welcome, Princess,"greeted the store owner, lazily residing on his chair. In his hands rested a flute, which Altessa assumed he had been playing. Within seconds, the dense sound started echoing across the room again.
Altessa considered leaving the shop, but decided to check around to see if anything interested her. She weaved around the stands, examining from whatever that thing was to this weird object. Many of the objects were just random; they weren't things like bracelets, but were shaped in what Altessa believed were pens, spatulas, and even what was supposed to be a garbage can.
One was shaped like a rose and was covered in rubies; it looked like a pin, but Altessa wasn't really sure.
"Excuse me, but what is this?" she asked the store owner, pointing at the object.
The man put down his flute again, and squinted. "That is a rose."
Altessa frowned. "Well, I know that, but what's it supposed to be?"
The man's wise eyes peered towards where the princess was pointing, and smiled. "That's a retainer,"he murmured.
Altessa was aghast. "A re-retain-a-WHAT?" she gasped, double-taking. She shot glances from the store owner to the rose retainer, stuttering her shock in incoherent sentences. "What are you--that's repulsive!!"
The man eyed her with an odd expression. "How so? I think jewels can be used for anything."
"But a retainer,"repeated Altessa as if it were the most disgusting thing in the world. "Who's going to use it? Who's actually going to put that in their mouth? That's gross!"
"Why, lots of people!" the man replied as-a-matter-of-factly. "You see, people buy things because of how different they are from things you see every day. Some, you may have mentioned, might set the retainer in their mouth, but others might find a different use for it."
"How weird!" was all Altessa could say.
"You do not comprehend? I will show you the use of this trinket." The man walked over to the retainer and picked it up delicately, which Altessa nearly threw up to. He attached the retainer onto his flute and presented it to Altessa. With a waving motion of his hand, he rang out,"Do you not see? It can be a decoration to my flute."
"That's sad,"muttered Altessa under her breath.
Unfortunately, the man heard. "Really, Princess, open-mindness is the key to imagination. You judge by physical appearance, do you not? Everything in my shop was hand-crafted by me, and it's the uniqueness that counts, such as this flute I have."
The store owner pushed his flute into Altessa's field of vision. The flute was not linear like what she normally perceived; the flute itself was bumpy and irregularly shaped. Uneven holes were lined carefully along its side. The color of the instrument was pale; Altessa believed that it was made out of a substance that wasn't the usual material flutes were normally made out of.
"It's not what you normally see, which is why it's appealing,"continued the man.
Altessa looked at the flute, the retainer, and back at the man. "Yeeeeeah,"she replied, taking a step back. "Sure... uh, I'll just, eh, if you don't mind, I just remembered that I have something to do at home." She edged her way to the door. "See you!"
Before the store owner could protest, Altessa was gone. He looked back at the retainer, shrugged, and plucked it off.
