Though her mind was muddled by booze, moon, and weather, the thought came to her quite clearly, sharp as the blade with which he presumed to know heaven’s mind. She voiced it so—he really did make it rain blood—and it was half with the awe of a curious child, half with the finality of a sentencing judge, she spoke.

In that tiny second of coherence, she too allowed herself to presume heaven’s mind: chance had no hand in her witnessing the tail-end of his rare performance, in her beholding the wicked beauty of the brooding Ishinshishi secret men literally took to their graves. The dance of fates led her to this stage, she realized; it was her turn to star.

Thus calmly accepting of her new role, she closed her eyes, ceded to the darkness, and fell.
