It is unmanly to be intoxicated by a women's graceful movements, the sway of her dress, the playful tilt of her chin and the laughter in her voice; but he finds himself powerless before hers. He says none of this to his master, of course - the old man spends most of life feeling guilty to another good, upright gentleman because of the gentleman's wife. "Women are nothing but trouble," his master once said loftily, the wrinkled corners of his eyes softening as he spoke. "They beguile you with their charms and then leave you gasping for breath and feeling like an utter idiot." He thinks his master has never sounded so lonely as he did then.
