"It was white and gold, and his horn shone like silver," Wuji enthused, eyes sparkling with the memory. "My dreams are usually blurry but in this one I saw everything very clearly! And then it leaped across the ocean, in the direction of the mainland. Mother, do you suppose people there see it, too?"

Yin Susu ruffled his hair, reminding herself that she should wash it more often - it stuck out from his head so. "If they're special like you, they might."

"Why? Why am I special?"

"Because you've got two wonderful fathers, and you live on the most beautiful island in the world."

"Oh." His face lit up, then slowly grew thoughtful. "I would like to visit the mainland, though. I'd like to see other people and places. Please, will we ever go to the mainland, Mother?"

"The magic," she said, "is here. There's magic on the mainland, but of a different kind. I think the ki-lin went there so it could reverse that magic, make it less harmful."

"I don't understand."

She did not reply. Her eyes were on the raft slowly bobbing on the shore, nearly finished and ready for sailing.
