"Whore!" Fire roared from Shendu's mouth, igniting a wall hanging. "Who did this to you? I'll devour him before your eyes!"

The concubine, Li Ming if he recalled correctly, cowered at his feet. Tears soaked her fear-twisted face. "P-please, my lord!" She begged, breath coming in short, sharp gasps. "Please, spare this worthless one! I have lain with no other man save you!"

"You're pregnant, you filthy human! Who did you betray me with? Who?!"

"My lord!" she wailed. "You must believe me! There has been nobody save your self!"

"Don't lie to me, whore!" He siezed her by the scruff of her neck and shook her roughly when she started to scream. Pathetic creature. How dare she betray him this way? After all he had done - bringing her to his palace from her tiny village, dressing her in silks and fine linens, keeping her fed on fine foods... She had done this. Stupid, worthless human! "Who, who did this?"

"No one!" Li Ming howled. "My lord-!"

Shendu snarled and tossed her away. "Birth the child then! If you live through that, Tso Lan will divine his parentage and I will rend all three of you to ribbons!"

The concubine curled up in a fetal position, sobbing quietly. The dragon demon left her there without a backward glance. Perhaps if he had looked back, he would have seen her push herself off the floor with hands clenched into fists. If he had lingered, he might have seen her terror gradually morph into fury. If he had stayed till nightfall, he would have seen a crone from the kitchens hobble in to care for Li Ming, as she had for every night since the girl had gotten pregnant.

And he would have feared, for the old Mongol witch knew quite a lot of midwifery as well as herbs and simples. Both mother and child would survive birth. The little half-dragon would have more than a fighting chance to live a long life. Mother and midwife magics would ensure quite a few things for the child yet to be born - most especially that he would bring grief to his father.
