If he thought about it, she was more beautiful this way. Rosy cheeks, red lips, pale face. It rather suited her, this tragic, pitiful air of majesty that hung over the house like heavy red drapes that one person couldn't lift.

Yesterday, he thought he could lift it.

Today he wasn't so sure. At first she feigned unfamiliarity, but when he got violent, she broke down. He thought he had her there.

But then she clasped her arms around him, whispered words to him with those red lips; like poison it poured into his ears into his heart—he could see the color too, it was red, only red.

I'll die, she said, if you don’t do this. I'll die.

In his confusion, he said something he didn't remember; she stared at him blankly, then laughed without a smile. He was almost horrified; he had never seen her laugh without a smile. Yet, he clung to it desperately—it killed him to see her without a smile; a laugh with no smile was better than no laugh at all.

It was then he realized he would do anything she asked to keep her laugh there. So he acquiesced, and her eyes gleamed with a quiet triumph, but she couldn't give him that small red smile that he wanted.
