When she woke that Monday morning, nothing had changed, and yet everything had. So she donned her hat and scarf, packed herself a meal, and left her life behind. She wondered now at the ease with which she’d done it, walked away from everything she had ever known. On that day, it had just been a part of the course of her life, and she’d done it with the same deliberate pace at which she made and sold hats.

In that old life, she used to tell people that wearing a new hat was like starting over, like becoming a new person. She still wore the same hat she’d left the house with that day. Somehow she’d become a new person despite that; a beautiful person, a wise person, a person who loved and was loved in return.

And her beloved? A boy who had never changed from the moment his heart had left him. Through various hair colors and disguises, underneath his ever-changing shape was a life stuck in time, teetering on the edge of annihilation but never moving either way. And as she captured his heart and returned it to him, he took hers along with his. She had left her life behind to bring life back to him.

And he would spend the rest of it returning the favor.
