The Price of Doing Business
by Jacynthe Demorae
The vampires of Eslin called its Elysium the Midnight Market. Unlike other cities, the Market didn't just provide a place for chit-chat and scheming for the city's Primogen and Harpies. Eslin was an open city, home to Camarilla, Sabbat, Anarch, Independent, and Autarkis. The Market, like the river that fed the city, provided for all.
Information ran the Market. For a price--blood, favors, the subtle juggling of the ranks that raised or lowered Couture--one could learn just about anything. One piece of information, however, was always free at the Market. While the stage-dressing displayed a triumvirate as the rulers of the city, all power rested in one vampire's hands: Jesstyn Greer, the Brujah Autarkis who had wrested power from the former Prince and levered the city out of reach of the Camarilla and the Sabbat.
Anyone believing otherwise, or confusing an Autarkis as simply another form of Caitiff was invited to visit the center of the Market on a windy night. There, in Awen Park, stood the Whistling Fountain. No-one knew for sure if the figure encased in the layers of bronze over steel was really the ex-Prince, or one of Greer's other enemies. It only took one visit, one listen of the wispy moans and fading whimpers carried on the wind to persuade the curious to ask no more.
