Be careful what you wish for; you might realize that you have attained it, only to lose it - and realize it too late.

So thought Bao Xiruo on winter nights where memories of her husband throbbed strong and disturbing in the waft of cold air that refused to stay out of the window. (And why would it? This hut in which she spent most of her time was as flimsy - if not as beloved - as that other one where she once lived and breathed her wish)

She had once believed (how heartbreakingly young she must have been!) that she would live as a wife and mother in a peaceful village until the end of her days. And yet, now, a step out of this hut would drive home the painful, different truth. Soldiers whose names she often could not pronounce stood on guard outside and accorded with her with the chilling title of Your Highness.

Why are you here, soldier? she asked silently. Why do you even bother speaking to a ghost? This woman you see does not want the moon she has found herself burdened with. All she wants is to be with her husband and their son. But her husband is gone; their son does not even know he existed.

At times like this she could almost hate her son for being the only reason she still held on to life.
