The refugee camps reminded him that he, too, had lost his family in a flood when he was small, and the first several years after that had been hard and scarred with ferocious hunger. That might explain why he had grown up almost dwarfish in height, he thought, as usual bemused that these speculations on things that no longer mattered - if they ever did - were still neatly and readily reserved for instant perusal.

He glanced over his shoulder, and sure enough, his fiancée was staring at him, frowning a little. He offered her a smile, but she just went on frowning. The situation was bothering her, and she wanted him to find a solution and ease her - along with the refugees - out of the misery. She believed that his mind was capable of creating a path where there had been none, and winding its way around barriers and deadlocks.

Sometimes the fact that he could read her mind as clearly as he was able to see the burst of colors in the air after the rain struck him as funny. Not, of course, that she would appreciate him telling her so - she would most likely sniff and point out that being so constantly smug was indecent. That was what made her so endearing. He was still smiling as she spurred her horse forward and rode up to him.
