drawn by the tears, the owl found the boy in the tree. it spread its sable wings, angled them, and settled on a nearby branch like snowfall. naked gray bark splintered under talons.

it smiled, a thin, curdled beak-grin.

crying still, tsugiri? the boy jerked his chin up at the voice of wind and waning moon. the owl watched with satisfaction his knees drawing tighter to his chest, his salt-streaked jaw hardening.

“bad dream,” he whispered, grudging.

ah, the owl sighed, ruffling its feathers. again?

the boy nodded, and the owl cocked its head at him for one still moment. then it sidled closer, out of the moonlight and into the weird night-shadow of the bare branches overhead. more bark flaked off in its talons’ wake, dull scraps pirouetting through the cold air.

don’t you want a present from aunt myobi to make it all better?

the boy shot the owl a sidelong glare. “enough of your,” he said, but it already was extending one wing.

deadly and gracious, the owl revealed in its wing-fold a crumb of spirit, a thread winding itself around a puff of ether. the tiny creature fluttered its obscure wings, seeking out the boy’s bare, fatal kusabi-saturated toes like a caterpillar nosing blindly for the next leaf. the boy glanced down at the sprite, then back up at the owl.

it smiled, a thin, endless alichino-grin.
