Above the smell of snow, there was a hint of ozone, and the heavy air of magic. There had been a storm last night, and Beth coasted over the snow, head turning this way and that, looking for the source of the magic. Her current traveling companion, a mystic named Shannon, trailed behind her.

The storm had been more than physical last night -- it was the Solstice and they were far too close to a leyline for a blizzard to be merely physical. The residents of the village she had taken shelter in knew that as well as she did, and were willing to pay her quite handsomely to identify anything that came out of the storm and keep it away from the village.

There was a stand of scraggly pine trees near a creek, and she turned to check them. There was a ringing in her ears, one that wasn’t merely due to the rush of air as she flew. “Do you hear that?” she asked Shan, who nodded.
Beth landed, nearly forgetting she would be knee deep in snow, even among the trees. Shan followed, doing so much more gracefully. With a nod, both drew out their weapons.

Closing her eyes, she listened. The ringing, and the magic, was coming from about ten feet ahead of them, among the branches of the largest pine. She opened an eye to glance at Shan, who tapped one finger to her heart. One person, not hostile.
Beth nodded, stepping forward. “Hello?” she asked. The sound stopped, and she heard rustling. From behind her, she heard Shan shift position. “We’re not going to hurt you.” She peered into the shadows beneath the tree. Something was there, but her eyes couldn’t quite make out anything more than ‘roughly humanoid’.

She stepped back a bit, then made a beckoning gesture. “Come on out.”

When he crawled out from beneath the tree, Beth took another step back. She heard Shan mutter ‘deebee’ under her breath. Well, that was kind of obvious. Beth wasn’t sure what he was – he looked like he was made of glass, soft enough to move. Moreover, he was definitely the source of the magic – he reeked of it. Something about him – maybe it was the too-thin, poorly-proportioned body – made her think that whatever he was, he was probably not that much older than a young teen.

He stumbled in the snow, and what Beth had thought was mottling on his ‘skin’ turned out to be cracks. She sighed. “Well, maybe someone back in town knows what to do with an injured rock kid. Let’s see if we can get him there without causing a riot, Shan.”
