[January 28] [Bleach] The Aviary

There was an aviary in one of the inner courtyards, nearly as tall as the surrounding building and made of twisted bamboo and dark wood. It had been a particular hobby of his grandmother’s, he remembered, breeding the little birds for the brightest plumage, the sweetest song. She would sit on a bench in the middle, never weighted down by her elaborate kimonos. When Byakuya was very young – the memories were quite hazy – she would call him to her there. She would pick up one stiff, reluctantly offered hand and set a bird on his palm. It had always been remarkably confusing, and he had always felt as if the Lady had been laughing at him.
The first time he touched Hisana, he thought she was like those birds, tiny and delicate – she proved him wrong very quickly. (And although he suspected that she was laughing at him, when she bowed her head and gripped his hands like a tiger, he also found that he didn’t particularly mind.)
