[Jan. 2, 2005] [Suikoden] Funeral Battles

Title: Funeral Battles
Day/Theme: Jan. 2, 2005- Battle without honor or humanity
Series: Suikoden, post Suikoden III in this tale
Character/Pairing: Sasarai and the Harmonian military, including OCs
Rating: PG-13 for gruesome acts of war

I had said and done everything I could against it, but in the end, Harmonia went to war with the Grasslands again. Both sides had suffered in the last conflict, and so the calls for vengeance truly struck a chord among many. Although Bishop Cabrini ordered me to the front lines, along with my troops, no one felt I was to be entirely trusted at the moment because of my peaceful sentiments. I was just plain tired of death and destruction. I had to surrender control of my forces to Albert Silverberg. At least I knew they would be employed wisely. This left me and my immediate staff to simply observe the carnage wrought by both sides.

Some of the more notable atrocities committed by our side included children burned alive in their homes, shrieking native women dragged away in chains to take back to Harmonia as slaves, and the fierce interrogations used to try and ferret out the whereabouts of Hugo, the Karayan chieftain. Burning wax was dripped upon those questioned and from the attitude of a friend of mine I believe that was likely the least of it...

For the enemy, I suppose I would have to say the skewered mage soldiers on sharpened sticks were particularly gruesome, but the gouging injuries inflicted on Matteo's face and arms had the greatest personal effect on me. Bishop Sunheibou took an arrow through the shoulder and Bishop Orsini's face was slashed by a saber in such a way that he reportedly appeared to be shedding tears of blood.

After each battle, I was left to preside over a field of corpses as the main force pushed forward. My chief of staff was forced to dirty his white gloves by digging pits to bury the enemy dead in, because the help we were left was insufficient to complete such a monumental task. I said prayers for the departed Grasslanders, just as I did for my countrymen. It was all I could do. These were battles without honor or humanity. Bishop Sakurazaki's mage troops rained fire from the sky to destroy the supplies of the enemy. Father La'Celif ordered his force to chase down a retreating squadron from Duck Village and massacre them down to the last remaining warrior.

Chief Hugo was spotted wearing the blood-stained hat he had taken from Father Matteo as though it were a kingly crown. Half of my men were lost in a surprise attack when lizards burrowed down underground and came up beneath them.

I prayed over so many deceased comrades during that sad war. I become so tired of the old prayers that I wrote some new ones to say at funerals. No one called into question the 'holy' reasons for this war aloud. There was nothing 'holy' about it.
