It was strangely quiet save for the distant roar of flames slowly burning an entire nation out of existence. He couldn’t distinguish between the fires he had started and the ones lit by the soldiers-turned-looters from his regiment. All he knew was that the only other person who didn’t seem to be enjoying this was crouched beside to him, the rifle on her shoulder set firmly as her jaw. Her eyes held a combination of weariness and vigilance that only seasoned officers had, and yet she was so young, even younger than him perhaps.

He had been one of the youngest alchemists to pass the state exam but he had always been a strangely mature child, often seeming older than his superiors. It wasn't until he reached the frontlines of the war that he realized he was just a boy playing with matches. Here, he met men like Kimblee, with ten times the destructive power in his hands than Roy had, and absolutely no qualms in using it. He didn’t think he would ever learn how to do that.

Suddenly, the crackling flames became deafening and their glow, blinding. He buried his face in his hands and let his fingers dig into his scalp. He just wanted to be away from this place and the savagery that surrounded him. His partner shifted beside him and he heard her set the rifle on the ground. He felt her hand on his shoulder and cringed. He needed to get a hold of himself.

“Mustang,” her voice was uncharacteristically soft and the omission of his title made him look up. The set of her jaw was gone and the corners of her mouth were curved down slightly. It was an expression that said, ‘you are not alone in this savage place’. Her hand moved to his neck as his hand shifted to her knee and he touched his mouth to hers to return the sentiment.

They would never be alone again.
