December 24 / Un Long Dimanche de Fiancailles / "Remember Me"

Mathilde smiles in relief as Manech sits beside her one fine afternoon. He says that his memory is slowly coming back and he can remember certain places and he can recall certain faces. But he still cannot remember exactly who she was in his life, and Mathilde is a little sad. But she is a patient girl and she will remain patient. After all, she is already twenty years old. It would be foolish to cry and fuss over something like this.
Manech looks at her with his deep blue eyes and he smiles again and tells her that she looks beautiful today. Mathilde feels her heart swell and she looks down at her hands that are folded on her lap. She can feel a blush on her cheeks and she knows Manech notices, but she also knows he will not say anything because he does not yet remember her.
"Seule en ce lieu sauvage..."
She looks up again when she hears his hushed whisper. "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" she asks, reaching out to hold his hands in her own. Manech only shakes his head.
"I was alone in that place...Bingo Crepescule...Alone in that savage place and I could not even see you..."
Mathilde is startled when Manech starts weeping openly, tears trickling out his eyes and down his cheeks. "Pourquoi est-ce que je ne peux pas me rappeler vous?" he cries, suddenly leaning into to embrace her.
Why can't I remember you?
That desperate cry reverberates in Mathilde's ears and she can only return his embrace, choking back her own tears as the sun slowly sets behind the cathedral.
She can only pray and continue to hope now...
