The Stars Up Above
by Cerise Tennyo

Viewed with Outside eyes, the entire tableau by-passed surreal and careened straight into absurd. A young woman in a half-soaked boy’s school uniform, another girl in a more traditional skirt and sailor blouse, on a rose-strewn platform that soared high into the sky. Dancing.

The sky-garden held dozens of hazards and no safeties, even in the light. Water ran over every flat surface, cascading over the edges, a thin waterfall with streamers of drowning roses. Her shoes should soaked through, her feet cold. She should be slipping and skidding over the slick surfaces.

Yet she held Himemiya’s hands, her feet stirring roses and sending ripples through the stars. Himemiya swayed closer and Utena snugged an arm around the girl’s waist. When she looked down, she somehow wasn’t surprised to see her uniform had changed. Her reflection and reality were one in the form of the elaborate gold-trimmed dress uniform of a Prince. And Himemiya...

Himemiya smiled, a beautiful smile that glowed like a newly born star. For once, the billowing gown, the golden headdress, they all looked like they belonged. Utena could feel the heavy silk under her fingertips, the warmth of the other girl’s body. This was not the spun-sugar ‘princess’ who stood on the sideline of a duel, the waxen figure crowning someone else’s wedding cake.

The Rose Bride.

“Why, Himemiya?” she asked. “Why this, why here, what...?”

“Does it really matter?”

Utena had never taken a dancing lesson in her life. Yet here they were together, without music, without light, and still they stepped together in perfect time. A flawless dance.

Utena looked into Himemiya’s brilliant, vivid eyes, still aglow with that rare, true smile. The dream of the Prince rested easily against Utena’s skin, a dream she felt she could expand into anything, beyond any horizon. A dream she could spin into the waking world, for the sake of that smile.
