It doesn't hurt when Athanasia says, "I hate you, daddy!" because, in the end, she could look at him with the cold dead eyes that haunt him every time he blinks. Claude knows. Instead, she cries and sobs her feelings into her father's shirt, forgiving him for everything. Hearing she hates him is better than any gift in the world.
Of course, she would. He hates himself too. But even if he hates himself forever, she'll know him for long, and Claude de Alger Obelia has never been down for long. She'll see him distressed, and that's nothing that the daughter who saved his life needs to see.
He nearly killed that daughter. Without memories, he didn't recognize Athanasia; he didn't respect her, felt pained by the presence of his own blood daughter, and out of pure rage and anger, he nearly killed her.
There are things you don't mean to do; things that hurt— awful things. Claude knows those plenty, yes. There are things you can't change, things that reverse time and take back what's his.
This is one of them.
