The rumbling, trembling, shaking bleachers roaring his name, the crowd with all attention, calling him, cheering for him, screaming for him, the thick sludge-mud slipping under his cheap rubber cleats, the jersey dripping in salt, sweat, and rain— the lights were blinding lightning, and the hand clapping his shoulder burned like fire, like pride, and yet he'd never felt so submerged in the darkness.
He was there for a reason. Carl. For every golden cup he'd spit-and-shine came the dying sparks in his eyes. Every win and one appeared missing.
Victory had never felt so cold. Derek moved through the crowds, socks damp, gaze towards the ground, not the sky; he couldn't relish, lest he was touched. Touched. His face and body had remained clear, but his brain and soul had been seared with scars. He saw the shadows beyond the light, suffered the wounds that heaven could not fix. He bore the damage.
They wouldn't heal.
