"What's this for?" Hotch asked.
Jordan hesitated for a moment. "You looked tired, and you're working hard, aren't you? So..."
She faltered for a second, then watched him.
"Sometimes, people need to be reminded that they're appreciated." Jordan smiled, then placed the coffee, a plain with caramel creamer and one sugar, Hotch's secret favorite acquired by an hour of surveillance and asking around, on his desk. It always helped to know what others liked. "You just looked like you were having a rough day."
"It's..." Hotch sipped from the cup as his eyes widened ever so slightly. "It's good. Thank you."
He was, and his heart should've asked for permission before feeling this happy and grateful for a simple favor.
Fingers sliding off Hotch's desk smoothly, her eyes twinkled with hidden delight, as if her profiling skills were on par with his — as if she'd ascertain what bothered him. Or perhaps they were inviting him to confide and tell a secret. Just like Jason's eyes of hidden depths, and hadn't Hotch said that before?
"It's no problem." Her smile widened, and the moratorium on inter-team profiling vanished the moment that Hotch conjured up the categories of her smiles: the gleeful, the shy and skittish, the genuine—expressive and glowing, the business and reserved— and this was the third. It suited her best.
Snapping back to attention, Hotch barely noticed her soundless steps as she walked from the office.
