[5 Dec][Hikaru no Go] Office Hours
Title: Office Hours
Day/Theme: 5 December, "The boy born with no father"
Series: Hikaru no Go
Character/Pairing: Hikaru’s father
Rating: G
The man stumbles through the front entrance of his home without any fanfare, closing the door behind him. Filling out the details in the paperwork for his department’s latest project had lasted longer than expected, and he'd barely caught the last train. He muses that his wife would not be pleased if he stayed the night in his office again. He knows he would never have stayed at work overnight, but his supervisor likes to congratulate him on his son’s latest victory, and there were always so many little details that he needed to work out in the office, and it is exhausting having to force himself to get on that train so late at night, and the commute always takes so long. He usually manages to catch a quick nap during the ride, but he quite firmly holds the opinion that those naps are always far too short. He hopes she won't complain about how much time and effort he puts into his work.
Once he removes his shoes and places them next to a pair of scuffed sports shoes, and drops his practical blue umbrella into the stand beside a bright yellow umbrella, the man totters his way up the stairs. If he falls asleep quickly enough, he might gain a full three hours rest. He goes through his nightly routine, taking off his suit and brushing his teeth, slipping quietly past a closed door to the room he shares with his wife. It is a relief to finally settle down and sleep.
He feels like he has barely put his head down when it is time to get up. He gets dressed in his clean suit and dons his blue tie. The man does not remember that Hikaru gave it to him years ago for some holiday or other—just that it is unobtrusive enough to allow him to blend into the crowd of salarymen. He needs to buy a new one soon. He leaves home at half past five, before the sun comes up and before his wife can make breakfast. He'll purchase something easy to eat before he enters the office. Shindou Masato knows he will be working overtime again.
*Does Hikaru’s father have a name? I just wrote the one that I see the most often in fandom, but if it’s wrong please let me know.
