She shook the sleeve of her robe out of the way and muttered a hex under her breath, flicking her wand decisively at the last gnome as it tried desperately to burrow underneath a hedge. It squawked and turned to stone.

 

She bent down and plucked it up, carrying it over to the side of the path and setting it down across from another – there were seven in total, growling little gnome statues of a lovely pale sandstone. They matched the gravel.

 

She smiled, and languidly stretched out a foot to smack into James’ legs and send him sprawling on the lawn, although Quidditch reflexes let him roll right back up. The paint he had been carrying soaked slowly into the grass, which was now a bright, glorious blue.

 

“How many times must I remind you, love,” Lily said with a sigh, dropping down onto her heels next to him and tapping his nose with her index finger, pushing his glasses up. “Muggle Garden Gnomes are not brilliant, they are deranged.”
