Xander dismounted and stood, staring at the remains of the camp. The Faceless had done their work well; stretched before him was little more than a spread of mangled meat, fabric, wood, and steel.
It took all Xander had to keep his expression neutral, letting his attention drift to a tattered flag half-fluttering, no longer claiming anything but destruction.
He'd seen enough, and his horse agreed, nudging him as if sensing his rider's unspoken distress.
It was not the first time that Xander had seen this sight, nor would it be the last.
But each time was still the worst.
