--
There was a fresh set of equations on the board, Emil noticed as he took his seat. This was the fifty-ninth set since he'd started on his near-daily visits. He could actually understand a bit of what was written, he realized, before dropping his eyes to his own books.
"Curious?"
Emil nodded, watching as the professor walked over to tap at a matrix with a familiar claw. Those claws tangled in his hair now, when his work was good, though every now and then, Emil was grateful for his own mistakes and getting hands over his, guiding him to the correct methodology and answer.
Fifty-nine sets of equations and they were still--
There was a sharp tap of claws, and yes, yes Emil was paying attention.
"But there are a lot of variables," he noted. Would a spell that complicated even be able to work with any accuracy?
"Yes. I'm pleased that you see that. But before we discuss it further, show me your work."
Happily, Emil pulled out pages of carefully-inked equations. He was sure of them, though he would not complain about any errors or the process of correction. But what he wanted was...
"Excellent." And there, claws in his hair, the warmth of his professor's hand, his body close. Emil shifted slightly, thankful for yet another too-big sweater.
Instead of the usual demand for clarity, the claws just tangled further and Emil gasped.
"Did that--?"
"It was f-fine," Emil stammered. Surely, that had been no accident. He swallowed hard.
Clarity.
But were there too many variables? Emil glanced to the board and took a deep breath.
"I have a question..."
