The time has come for the return to Castle Askr. As the Knights of Askr, under the leadership of King Gustav and Queen Henriette, engage the Order of Heroes at the borders of Embla, Alfonse, Anna, and Sharena, accompanied by Bruno and the Heroes they have all gathered for their mission, enter their former home through a secret entrance revealed to them by Niles ....

"Xander, Veronica, and Inigo are providing back-up outside," Bruno said, holding his open tome in one hand. "They will prevent us from being surrounded."
"If that side is covered," Alfonse replied, squinting his eyes as they adjusted to the dimness of the catacombs, "the question then becomes: If we're going to split up, who's going in which direction, now that we're inside?"
Anna immediately said, "Niles, Odin, and I will start down here and cover the lower floors. Alfonse, you and Celica should head for the throne room. Sharena, you and the Emblians can hold the front gate. Bruno, you and Leon can head for the living quarters, just in case the Summoner is taking a powder. It's a big castle, but the bulk of the Order is out fighting. We can do this."
After a round of well-wishing, the team split into its components, leaving Anna and her two companions in the catacombs to begin their search, though —
Anna sighed and said, "There, the others are gone. I don't like it, but that means we can go ahead with your plan, Niles." She handed her axe to Odin and held out her wrists. "Capture me." She rolled her eyes, sounding disgusted.
"Always happy to oblige," Nile said, quickly binding her wrists before turning to Odin and adding, "Here's my chance to interrogate her. What do you think, old friend? Should I employ some of my old, time-honored techniques?"
Odin opened his mouth to answer, but Anna interrupted him to say, "If you're thinking of roughing me up, or of doing anything else, Niles, that's really not necessary. Let's just get on with this so that we can —"
"Leo's on the front lines, Anna," Niles said, all traces of humor disappearing from his voice. "You're going to have a hard time keeping your promise." He tilted his voice, raising one finger to silence Odin when he opened his mouth again. "You're going to have to give me a good reason not to turn you over to the Summoner and mean it. What if Leo dies in battle? What, then?"
Anna blinked, panic started to rise in her chest. "You knew that was a possibility, Niles. Are you telling me you're thinking of going back on your word now, when we're so close to success?" She gritted her teeth. "What do you want me to do? Beg? Let you have your way with me? I'll do anything to keep that promise and make this work, even if I have to debase myself!"
The smile returned. "Perhaps that's all I needed to hear?" He tilted his head. "Much as I enjoy watching you squirm, we don't have a great deal of time." He nodded to Odin, who picked up the length of rope that bound her hands. "Let's go, then. We'll see this through to the end – all the way to Lord Leo." He narrowed his eyes as he started leading them onwards. "You'd really 'debase' yourself, Commander? We'll have to work out the definition of that term."
At that, Anna grumbled, "I'm not going to forgive you for a great many things when all of this is over, Niles. You'd do well to remember that."
Odin said, his voice sympathetic, "I, Odin Dark, shall permit no harm to befall you, o Commander of the Order of Heroes." And he added, reducing his volume, "Seriously. I trust Niles, but I'd never let him hurt you."
"Just don't run when we get to the Summoner," Anna said. "That's all I ask."
Silence, then, as they passed through the catacombs – not the tombs of the ancient Kings and Queens of Askr, since those remains had always been interred in a special necropolis in the mountains, but predating the royal family, possibly home to whoever had ruled the land prior to the name "Askr", since the castle grounds had always been regarded as sacred for unknown reasons. The whole place had a calm quietude about it that reminded Anna of places in other worlds that she had visited – or, perhaps, that others like her had visited.
Anna noticed light up ahead after a little while, and Niles said to her, his voice soft, "If there's a sentry up there, it'll be showtime. Ready?"
She nodded. "Ready as I'll ever be."
END.
